Glassbar Island Volunteers clean out the blackberry vines at Sunset Vista.
A week or so after the fire at Sunset Vista on May 15th, 2008, Glassbar Island Volunteers covered the burn area with grass seed donated by Paul (from Oregon State Parks).
As summer came and went, it looked like the only thing coming back in the burn area were lots of blackberry vines - just what we didn't need. Then around the end of November, the guys started removing the blackberries and guess what, they found a lot of nice green grass that had grown vigorously beneath the blackberries which had actually protected the grass seedlings from the elements during the Summer and Fall.
So, in December, some of the Glassbar Island Volunteers, removed the blackberry vines so that the grass would grow better. June of 2009, see image on the right, what a difference from a year ago - THANKS GUYS! |
